Modular Radiation Portal Monitor and Personal Radiation Detector

Overview

The Modular Radiation Portal Monitor and Personal Radiation Detection System was developed as a B2B and B2G security product for cargo transport and shipping facilities in partnership with a UCLA material science research lab for the purpose of tracking radioactive materials. This radiation detection ecosystem employs a proprietary PVT compound to detect radiation from the gamma, Neutron, and X-Ray spectrums. The modularity of this platform allows for most parts to be used interchangeably between the Radiation Portal Monitor (RPM) and Personal Radiation Detector (PRD), thus allowing the overall system to be priced more competitively without sacrificing efficacy.

Modular Tower Section System

The modularity of this system allows for 4 functionalities due to the segmentation of each product into sections called “Tower Sections” with lengths of 200mm each. Firstly for the PRD, a single Tower Section is required to operate the handheld variant of this product, but it is possible to add successive sections to the desired length of the user. Second, similarly to the PRD, the RPM is specifically designed to be assembled to the desired height. In the default configuration, this system can support a height up to 5 meters with 25 Tower Sections, or tall enough to scan a double-stack train-car, but accommodations can be made to customers who wish to exceed this height. Third, in the event of damage to any of the Tower Sections, the decentralized nature of the system allows for the remainder of the Tower Sections to remain operational until repairs are made, and said repairs can be made by simply replacing the damaged section with a replacement Tower Section. Fourth, the consistent spacing between the detector elements and the Tower Sections allows the Motherbox to generate a 3D heatmap of a target derived from the date provided by each Tower Section.

Motherbox System

Lastly, relevant to each RPM Tower, a single Motherbox is required to operate each Tower. In contrast to the Towers which are made from a combination of radio-transparent Carbon Fiber Polypropylene and Polycarbonate parts with stainless steel reinforcement, the Motherboxes are machined from aluminum to withstand a wide array of environmental factors including extreme heat, cold, rain, snow and airborne particulate weather phenomena. Through using similar design principles as are used for similar hardware aboard commercial aircraft and constructed from both CNC billet and 10G aluminum panels, the Motherboxes are built to outlast the towers they serve.

PRD Ergonomic Handle

The handle of the PRD was developed with direct feedback from professionals who use PRDs on a daily basis and with an open line of communication with prison guards and TSA agents with insights into the equipment preferences of law enforcement officers of various designations who use wand-style metal detectors on a daily basis. The result was an ergonomic handle that was specifically designed to be as comfortable as possible for as wide of a variety of hand types as possible. In addition, recommendations and design notes were taken from the Rapid Rotation Baton employed by law enforcement to create a functional, convenient, and intuitive storage and deployment method. This allows for the user to quickly deploy and holster the PRD quickly and with minimal dexterous focus.

Cable connections

The connections from the Motherbox to the RPM Tower Sections are USB A to USBC respectively, and the Motherbox has outlets for an ethernet and power cable. The PRD on the other hand has a single USB-C port.

Companion product: Metal Detectors

Developed in concert with the Modular Radiation Portal Monitor and Personal Radiation Detector systems, the metal detector product series employs many of the same concepts and uses the same handle. While a portal monitor exists in this product line, the headline product in this project is the handheld metal detector wand.
